Addition Algorithms

Yesterday we started our unit on addition with regrouping. The students had the opportunity to show the strategy they use to add with regrouping.

The students shared their addition strategies with the class.

Mrs. Padgett, a 3rd grade teacher, created a tutorial on the various addition algorithms for your reference at home.

Week 7

Week 7 Newsletter

Good morning! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. The newsletter is attached on the above hyperlink. Be sure to refer to the electronic copy or the hard copy in your child's STAR folder for test dates, upcoming events, and a glance at our curriculum this week.

We will begin introducing addition strategies. I will provide a link for you that will include a tutorial video on the various addition strategies. I encourage you to use this as you assist your child with math homework.

Also, be on the look out for our Daily 5 stations and how we are utilizing the blending learning approach to make our instruction more time efficient. Each child can work at their own pace using this teaching approach. I am excited to begin utilizing this in other content areas as well.

Have a wonderful week!

Pirate Day!

If you have ever read, How I Became a Pirate, you probably know that pirates have a reputation for not doing homework, not brushing their teeth, and not eating veggies. Our crew dressed the part of pirates, and even said a few Pirate phrases, but their garb didn't stop them from working hard!

By the way, Why do Pirates say "Arrr!"... or did they really say it? We found the answer on Wonderopolis. Click on the link to find out for yourself! Shiver me Timbers, I think you will be surprised!

And this Pirate belongs to me! :)

We had a great day ye Mateys!

Week 6

Good morning! I hope you found fun and rest over the weekend! This morning I read my daily devotion, "Lord Unrush Me". How powerful are these 3 words on a Monday morning? That is my hope this week for our crew. I hope that despite the busyness, we can find time to enjoy one another's company, develop a thirst for knowledge, and live out our goals of being the best "me" that we can be.

Click on the link for our Newsletter. If you find that it is not opening, please email me and let me know. I forgot to click "share" on a few of the previous links.

Check back as we read and respond to our two inspiring texts this week. The students are eager to learn what our Project will be on... maybe I will post a hint on Friday?!?! :)

Have a fabulous, Unrushed week!

Special Read Aloud

We were very honored to have Dr. Patterson visit our class on Wednesday to read a book titled, Exclamation Mark, about an exclamation mark that just wanted to blend in and not stand out. He was denying who he truly was meant to be.
We loved this book so much that we are reading it next week along with the text, What Do You Do With An Idea?
Thank you, Dr.Patterson!

Regions Vocabulary Review

We have our Region Vocabulary quiz scheduled for Thursday. Your child should have their Social Studies Journal in their book bags. They only need to focus on the vocabulary and identifying the 6 regions for the quiz (Do not focus on the specific details of each region for now).

Here are two helpful videos for vocabulary and regions review!

And here is our fun Regions song again!

Something to Tweet (and blog) About!

Our Crew is visiting www.wonderopolis.org in their Daily 5 Stations. We are focusing on how to research about animals we are interested in learning more about. The students performed this research independently and recorded 1-2  facts on their Twitter Page! Enjoy!

Identifying the Main Idea and Supporting Details

The students are enjoying Daily 5 Stations! Currently, we are focusing on reading informational articles . We are learning how to identify the meanings of words using the context, identifying main idea and supporting details, and also writing reflections on the articles. This work is preparing them for our upcoming PBL. We will 'adopt' a species to research and raise awareness on "How people affect Animals", specifically their habitats and as a result, adaptations.
Continue to follow this as we become activists and a voice for the animals that cannot speak for themselves.

Our reading test has been postponed until next week. We will be ready to test next Friday, September 19th.
Below is an example of the passage the students are reading to identify main idea. There will be a similar passage on the test.
